Applied Moulding Cabinet Doors

Decorative moulding strips applied to a flat or raised panel door build up extra dimension and a formal, furniture-quality profile — a traditional detail achieved with trim rather than carving the panel itself.

What is an applied moulding door?

An applied moulding cabinet door starts out as a standard five-piece flat or raised panel door, then has thin strips of decorative wood moulding attached to the face or perimeter of the panel. Instead of carving a profile from a single piece of solid stock, the moulding is added on as trim — which lets us build up a wider, more elaborate, and more traditional profile than a single carved panel typically allows.

It's a technique borrowed straight from furniture and fine millwork, and it reads as a formal, custom detail — a step up in visual weight from a plain flat or raised panel door, without changing the underlying door construction.

Every applied moulding door we install is made to order for your kitchen, in your choice of panel base, profile, and finish.

Ways to make it yours

Every applied moulding door is made to order, so each of these choices is yours to mix and match.

Raised or Flat Panel Base

Add moulding trim to a raised panel door for an even more elaborate profile, or to a flat panel for a framed, traditional look.

Traditional & Transitional Profiles

Moulding profiles range from a simple, subtle frame to a more elaborate, formal trim detail — we'll match your kitchen's style.

Paint or Stain

Applied moulding shows beautifully in classic painted whites and creams, or in richer stained wood tones for a formal look.

Doors & Drawer Fronts

The moulding detail can carry across matching doors and drawer fronts for a cohesive, furniture-quality kitchen. Compare drawer fronts.

Overlay or Inset

Full overlay, partial overlay, or inset mounting — each changes how much of the cabinet frame shows. See the overlay guide.

Refacing or New Cabinetry

Applied moulding is available for both cabinet refacing and new custom cabinetry projects.

Applied moulding door questions

An applied moulding cabinet door starts as a standard flat or raised panel door, then has thin strips of decorative wood moulding applied to the face or perimeter of the panel to build up extra dimension and detail. Rather than carving a profile from a single piece of solid stock, the moulding is added on as trim, which lets us achieve a more elaborate, traditional profile than a single carved panel would allow.
A standard raised panel door is shaped from one piece of solid wood, with the profile carved directly into the panel. An applied moulding door builds a similar profiled look by attaching separate moulding strips to a flat or raised panel base, which allows for wider panels, more elaborate trim profiles, and a more traditional, furniture-like appearance.
Applied moulding doors are a favorite in traditional and transitional kitchens where homeowners want a formal, furniture-quality look. The added trim detail works especially well painted in classic whites and creams, or stained in richer wood tones for a more formal dining or kitchen space.
Both. Applied moulding can dress up a flat panel door with a framed, traditional look, or add extra dimension to a raised panel door for an even more elaborate profile — we build it either way to match your kitchen's style.
Yes — applied moulding is available during cabinet refacing. Your existing cabinet boxes stay in place and we install new made-to-order applied moulding doors and drawer fronts, typically for $12,000–$22,000 depending on kitchen size.
Both. Applied moulding doors are available in full overlay, partial overlay, or inset mounting, just like any of our door styles. See our overlay guide for how each option looks.
