Is it right for you?

Is this right for your kitchen?

Light rail is a finishing detail. It makes the most sense when you have, or are adding, under-cabinet lighting.

A good fit if

  • Under-cabinet lighting you want hidden, so the fixtures don't show from the counter.
  • A kitchen being painted, refaced or rebuilt, where the light rail can be planned with the rest.
  • Upper cabinets with a front edge you want tidied up.

Not the right fit if

  • Cabinets that already reach the ceiling. You don't need light rail there.
  • Very uneven ceilings. We may recommend keeping the molding lower, and we'll show you what looks right in your kitchen.
  • A kitchen with no under-cabinet lighting. Without lights to hide, the rail isn't doing much.
The process

Light rail, planned with the rest of the kitchen

Light rail is simplest when it's planned early. Here is how we handle it.

  1. On your walls
    Measure the runs

We measure which runs need light rail, and where the ceiling and any soffits sit. We also check where the lighting runs, so the rail covers it.

  2. Matched to your cabinets
    Build and finish

The rail is built and painted or stained to match your cabinets. It's sized to hide the lighting, not to stand out as a feature of its own.

  3. Tight seams
    Install and fit

The rail is installed and fitted to your walls, so the seams stay tight. We check the lighting from the counter before we leave.

What you get

Planning

What to expect

Light rail is usually a day or two of work for most kitchens. It's most often added along with painting, refacing or new cabinets. Adding it to a finished kitchen later is possible, but it's easier to plan from the start.

Tell us what lighting you have or plan to add. Photos of the underside of the cabinets help. We'll tell you whether the existing lights need to move before the rail goes on.

If light rail is part of a larger project, the timing follows that project. If it's on its own, we'll confirm the timing on the written quote.

Comparing options

Light rail versus crown

Crown sits at the top of the cabinets, against the ceiling. Light rail sits under the uppers and hides lighting. Both are finishing details, and both should be painted or stained to match. If your kitchen needs one, we'll say so. If it needs both, we can plan them together so they line up.

Yes. It can be added to some runs of cabinets, not all of them.

No. It's not needed when cabinets already reach the ceiling, and it works with soffits.

No. Crown sits at the top of the cabinets against the ceiling, and light rail sits under the uppers. See our crown molding page for crown.

On very uneven ceilings, we may recommend keeping the molding below the ceiling. We'll look at yours when we measure.

We can work around your lighting, and we can point you to trusted electricians. Light rail is the finishing piece, not the wiring.

Painted finishes can be matched to your cabinets. Stained finishes are matched by wood species and finish. We'll show you samples before we build.
