Is it right for you?

Is this right for your kitchen?

Soft-close hinges are a small change with a big effect, but only on the right doors. Here is how to tell.

A good fit if

  • Your doors slam or bang, and the hinges are the reason.
  • You're already getting new doors, which is the simplest time to add soft-close hinges.
  • Your existing doors are on standard hinges, and we can check whether they'll take soft-close.

Not the right fit if

  • Doors hung on knife hinges, the Youngdale style with a slot cut into the edge of the door. Euro soft-close hinges aren't recommended for them.
  • Lipped doors, where a routed lip sits partly inside the opening. The hinge geometry doesn't suit them.
  • Doors that are warped, split or failing. Fix the door first, then think about the hinge.
The process

Checking your doors before anything is ordered

We don't guess. We look at the doors and hinges first.

  1. Doors and hinges
    Send photos

Email a few photos of your doors, their hinges and the edge of a door to Raymond@homesteadcabinetdesign.com. Or leave your details with us, and we'll follow up and ask for what we need.

  2. An honest answer
    We check the fit

We look at how each door is made and hung, and tell you whether your current doors can take soft-close hinges. If they can't, we'll say so and explain why.

  3. The easiest time
    Upgrade with new doors

If your doors aren't suited, new doors are the simplest time to add soft-close hinges. Replacement doors and refacing are both built for them from the start.

What you get

Planning

What to expect

After we get your photos, we'll reply with what we see. Hinge work on its own is a small job. If it's part of new doors, the timing follows the door schedule.

Please send clear photos. Show the whole door, the hinge, and the edge of the door where it meets the frame. A close-up of the hinge where it goes into the door helps too.

If you're not sure what you have, that's fine. Describe what you see, and we'll ask the follow-up questions.

Comparing options

Soft-close hinges and the rest of the door

A soft-close hinge is only as good as the door it's on. A well-made door on a quality hinge closes quietly for years. A door that's warped or hung on the wrong hinge won't, no matter what hardware goes on it. Get the door right, and the hinge does its job.

Ask us before you buy. The right hinge depends on the door and how it's mounted, and a wrong hinge is hard to undo.

No. Hinges control how a door closes. A sagging door has a different cause, and we'll tell you what it is when we look at the photos.
